Very
rarely will any fan of high school or college basketball see a greater
collection of talent all in one gym than what the Jack Jones Shootout has in
store for fans on March 27 at American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida.
No
less than 10 prospects who are committed to attend BCS conferences will
participate in the event. In fact players in the game will represent all six
power conferences next season when they don their college uniforms.
A
trio of talented guards headline the event. A pair of future Arkansas
Razorbacks, Rashad Madden and B.J. Young, are as talented as any player in
the nation, and future Arizona Wildcat Nick Johnson might be the premier
defender and athlete in the entire class.
Young
and Madden will team with Hunter Mickelson during the game. Mickelson and
Madden are very familiar with each other as they were on the travel circuit
together with the Arkansas Wings, but it is Young who might be the most
intriguing player in the game.
Young
is a highly athletic 6-foot-3 guard who can play either on the ball as a
point guard or off the ball as a scorer. This past summer Young came out of
virtually nowhere to earn five-star status according to Scout.com, and is
one of the most exciting players in the country.
Madden
is a versatile 6-foot-5 player who can play point guard, shooting guard, or
small forward. His long arms, athleticism, and ability to get to the rim, as
well as hit shots, makes him as tough a matchup as there is in the country.
Mickelson is a skinny, but effective, post player who has athleticism and
can hit the mid-range jumper.
While
those three Razorbacks will be looking to make noise, do not sleep on a pair
of big name players from Findlay Prep out of Henderson, Nevada. Johnson and
his teammate Amir Garrett definitely know how to entertain.
Johnson
is a 6-foot-3 scoring guard who can really get after it on the defensive
end. Over the course of the past year Johnson has shown an ability to
shutdown some of the best scorers in the country. While that is nice, it is
Johnson's athletic ability that has so many looking forward to seeing him.
Arguably the most explosive guard in the country, Johnson is capable of a
highlight reel caliber dunk at any time.
Garrett
is right there with Johnson in terms of athleticism. At 6-foot-6 Garrett is
headed to St. John's next season, though he also could have a bright
future as a pitcher in baseball. Right now Garrett gets it done with
athleticism and energy, but his skill level is improving. Still he is at his
best above the rim and in transition.
As
if that wasn't enough, one of the best outside shooters in the country
will also be making an appearance. Memphis native, and future Minnesota
Golden Gopher, Andre Hollins can absolutely light it up from deep. With a
quick trigger and a great idea of how to get open, Hollins can get things
going in a hurry.
Beyond
that, the Virginia Cavaliers will be represented with three players who will
wear the Orange and Blue next year. Shooter Paul Jesperson out of Wisconsin
was as hot a commodity as there was during July, Darion Atkins is an
athletic power forward who can be a definite impact guy as a freshman, and
Malcolm Brogden is a do it all wing who can really score.
All
of those players and more will be at the Jack Jones Shootout. With so much
talent on the floor it should be an exciting game and one of the premier
high school events in the country.
